NaPoWriMo: Day 16

Frida Kahlo, Self Portrait with Necklace of Thorns

There are cats and wings,

monkey sorts and deals the cards

the jack of hearts, he flips into her lap

it unravels and with a dash of red

paints her mouth

stuffed the bird dangles

a token that flaps, dark

like a shadow, a blackened lung

whose exhalations sing of hope

crack it’s toughened hide, it flops

and slides, clever creature

to wait inside the dry husk of old thoughts

until the monkey plucks it free

picking apart the honeycomb

of a thorn.
